squirrels chewing

Asked May 11, 2016, 3:07 PM EDT

Have squirrels chewing on plastic storage containers (the large, heavy, lidded type for patios and pool areas) in my yard Two on my patio are used to store flower pots and garden tools.. Is there something I can spray or paint onto the containers that will discourage the squirrels? My neighbors have had a problem with squirrels chewing the plastic pads that are placed under heat-pumps/AC units. Short of exterminating all of the gray squirrels in the U.S. is there a way around this?

Nothing works against all the squirrels all of the time. There are products such as Ropel or MIller's Hot Sauce that you can buy that may or may not work. Some people smear vasoline over the item that the squirrels are tending to chew. Some people mix up a concoction of hot pepper and spray it on what the squirrels tend to chew. Some people put hardware cloth over items that the squirrels tend to chew. Reducing the squirrel population sometimes helps. https://extension.umd.edu/sites/default/files/_images/programs/hgic/Publications/HG90%20Dealing%20wi... http://icwdm.org/handbook/rodents/TreeSquirrels.asp vw
