Killing Wisteria

Asked May 11, 2016, 11:51 AM EDT

I must find a way to kill wisteria permanently. I have wisteria growing on my fence and it is slowly killing the trees on the the other side of the fence. I don't own the property on the other side of the fence. I have wisteria popping up all over the yard and the runners/vines are a constant tripping hazard. I have tried Roundup and that didn't work. How can I be rid of wisteria forever?

Hi there. You are right, the Chinese wisteria that is invasive is bad news to the trees when it is allowed to run rampant.

Here is a document that talks about getting rid of it. http://texasforestservice.tamu.edu/uploadedFiles/Landowners/Wisteria.pdf

The chemicals discussed will kill it, no question. If you have large vines on your side of the property, cut those vines and spray the regrowth.

This document discusses if the efficacy of the treatments and the timing. http://www.srs.fs.usda.gov/pubs/ja/ja_miller111.pdf
