Apple reproduction

Why won't an apple seed reproduce the same variety as itself? What does it revert to? How did the original varieties of apple trees get their start?

It's no different than people -- the offspring is never identical to the parents. Only if people could be cloned would the offspring be identical. It's the same with an apple, it is the result of a male x female cross (a result of pollination, preferably cross-pollination) from two parents. Once a unique individual is found to have desirable characteristics, then it is perpetuated by cloning. Make sense?
