Window boxes

Asked May 7, 2016, 1:41 PM EDT

I have volunteered to plant a window box for one of our residents at the nursing home. I want mine to be the best!!!! The box is on the west side of the building. What flowers would be the best for that location?

One of the big problems with window boxes in the Midwest is getting them to deal with the heat. Your site, on the west side of the building, is going to be very hot, unless there are some shade trees blocking it.

Please check out this publication from Clemson University on Hanging Baskets and Window Boxes: http://www.clemson.edu/extension/hgic/plants/landscape/flowers/hgic1154.html . They list plants by sun/shade. Anything that can tolerate the summer in South Carolina should do well in Illinois.
