Tall ornamental grasses for western slope zone 6

Asked May 4, 2016, 10:29 AM EDT

We are looking for an alternative to pampas grass that will be similiar or greater in height, and provide a visual screen. We don't like the fluffy seed heads of the pampas grass but we still need a plant that will be tall and dense. The landscape plan calls for 5 plants. We are in Paonia zone 6, 5700 ft. thank you

There aren't many grasses that are bigger than pampas grass. Plume or ravannae grass is about the same height but seems to becoming a bit of a pest due to reseeding. Utah has put it on its weed list and we are watching it. There is a Giant Silver Maiden Grass, Miscanthus Here is a factsheet on grasses with zones. I would go for zone 5 or lower. http://extension.colostate.edu/topic-areas/yard-garden/ornamental-grasses-7-232/
