haralson apple trees
We want apples for cooking pies. Should we get haralson or haralred? Which would be best? Which is easier to plant and maintain?

Well....this is hard to answer because everyone has a different idea of a "good tasting, good cooking" apple! Any of the potential candidates are equally easy to maintain - as long as you read their labels closely. Make sure you chose plants that are resistant to Fireblight, and other diseases.
In my opinion? Any Haroldson apple is to die for, but mainly as out-of-hand eating. But again...that's just me. I hate to waste a fresh Haroldson on cooking!
