Beetles in Horses water

Asked May 2, 2016, 9:17 PM EDT

These showed up in the horses water. There are about 25 since yesterday. They are about 1/4 inch long. What might they be and are they something we should be treating?

There are a number of families of so called "water beetles" that look similar (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_beetle). They are harmless and may be living in the tanks especially if there is adequate vegetation. No treatment is needed. If you want an exact species determination take a few to the Linn Co. Extension office and they will send them to OSU for id.
