dog waste in soil

Asked April 21, 2016, 12:51 AM EDT

My dog has used a 5 x 15 ft area of dirt to poop and pee for 2 years. I want to now use the area for planting flowers and shrubs. What should I do to the soil? Replace it or supplement it with a fertilizer? Thank You

There is no problem with using this soil for ornamental plants. The pet waste will, if anything, add nutrients and enrich the soil. Natural decomposition by bacteria, worms and fungi will break down the waste (all healthy and won't harm your new plants.) Naturally, you don't want to work in the soil if it has fresh feces (lift those out with a shovel and dispose) and use gloves when you work in the soil for at least a year.
