Grass or Weed

Asked April 15, 2016, 10:27 AM EDT

I have these weird clumps or grass/weed growing in my lawn and I have tried a few things to get rid of it and nothing seems to work. Is there anyway to get rid of this other than digging it up? I have attached a picture. Thanks in advance for any advice.

It's a bit difficult to tell from the photo, but it could be crabgrass or quackgrass. For crabgrass, a pre-emergent fertilizer will be helpful next year. At this point, you may consider a non-selective herbicide (RoundUp, i.e.) to help get things under control. Be aware that the surrounding grass is also susceptible to non-selective herbicides, so be very careful with the application and avoid windy times of the day, should you choose to go that route.

Best regards.
