Overgrown Crepe Myrtle

Asked April 8, 2016, 1:06 PM EDT

Have an overgrown crepe myrtle. Crepe myrtle is a Miami, about 4 years old. Had planned to prune in February was detained out of town. Can I still prune it in the first week of April? Any suggestions on pruning techniques would be appreciated - I do not want to cut the tops off, but prune the branches back.

Your crape myrtle should be opened up, but not topped. The following publication from our sister extension university in SC should be helpful. http://www.clemson.edu/extension/hgic/plants/landscape/trees/hgic1009.html
