Red crystal like stone

Asked April 7, 2016, 10:55 AM EDT

My fiance broke a rock open and it appears to be what looks like crystal with deep red in it, polished up a bit and its shiny. Could it be red crystal, rhodocrosite but deep red?

What a gorgeous red! Given that New Hampshire is underlain by granitic and metamorphic rocks, there are a number of minerals that can be red and fit with the geologic environment. It may also be a massive garnet. I suggest you take it to a geology department at one of the colleges or universities near you. They would be able to definitely identify it. What a find!
