Diseased Spruce Trees - Need Help Identifying Cause

Asked April 2, 2016, 4:20 PM EDT

I have two spruce trees on my property that are not healthy. Unfortunately quite a few other spruce trees in my neighborhood (North Eastern Shoreview) are in similar condition. Can you identify the cause based on these photos (probably Rhizophaera Needle Cast)? Any advice for possible treatment would be appreciated.

It would probably be best to send a sample to the plant disease clinic to determine what actually is the cause of your spruce problem. Once you have determined what it is for sure you can decide what to do about it. It appears that your trees are fairly large and it is likely that you will consider removing them. They will not grow new needles and fill those branches that are bare. Colorado Spruce are the most susceptible to needle cast. Here is a link to info about spruce diseases for you to compare your symptoms and also a link to the disease clinic. http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/yard-garden/trees-shrubs/spruce-tree-diseases/ http://pdc.umn.edu/services-fees
