plant grass seed

Asked March 30, 2016, 1:02 PM EDT

I live in Ada Township/Kent County and I was wondering if it is okay to plant grass seed now? Or should I wait for the threat of freeze/frost to be gone before I plant grass seed?

Thanks, Sue

The best time in the spring to plant grass seed is from the middle of April to the middle of May. The soil has warmed somewhat and there is often adequate rain and milder temperatures than at some times of the year. In the fall, the test time is mid- August to mid-September.

In the spring, if seeds go down too early, it creates a bird and critter buffet and rains can wash away seeds. If seedlings germinate, a hard frost can kill the tender sprouts.
