Pretty Colorful Trees

I live in Wentzville, MO and the soil in my yard is a very dense clay. I moved in last year to a fairly new property and have had the 2 trees in my front yard die. I'm looking to replace them with something colorful, and was wondering what a nice tree would be that would grow in clay.

One tree I have seen do fairly well in clay soils is 'Winter King' green hawthorn. This is a mid-sized tree with pretty flowers in the spring, good fall color and amazing red berries in the winter. Here is a link:
