Hi Brenda,

No special fertilizer is required. A complete fertilizer, one that has even amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium such as 10-10-10 is a good way to go for both your tree and your shrubs. Another thing to do to get it back into good health is to spread a half inch layer of composted manure over the root zone, being careful to keep it off the bark. Finally, make sure you are providing proper irrigation. Non-desert trees and shrubs typically need water once every 7 to 14 days in the summer, every 10 to 21 days in the spring and fall, and every 14 to 21 days in the winter. Drip irrigation is best and a set of 4 emitters arranged in a circular fashion around the tree at the same distance that the branches extend will reach the absorbing roots of the tree. Each time the water should reach a depth of 24 to 36 inches. You can test the depth by using a soil probe. A simple piece of rebar will suffice. You push it into the soil where you were watering until you meet resistance and that is how you know how deep the water went.
