preparing soil for grass seed

How to prepare soil for planting grass seed. Realize spring is not the best time to plant grass but we purchased the home last October and were forced to grade the yard to eliminate storm water runoff under the house.

You might consider doing a soil test first to see what your pH is and what fertilizer is needed. The Madison County Cooperative Extension Service does up to 10 free samples per home or farm each year. Here a link to my office webpage. On it is a publication on how to take soil samples. https://madison.ca.uky.edu/horticulture

You would need to drop off your soil sample at our office located at 230 Duncannon Lane in Richmond, KY. We get the results in about two weeks.

There are two windows that are best for planting grass seed: Mid February to Mid March and Mid August to Mid September. So you are not too far off from that first time range.

This publication should be helpful: http://uknowledge.uky.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1008&context=anr_reports
It goes over how to start a lawn.
