My husband and I are interested in purchasing land in Central Ohio in the future and leasing it out for farming or grazing. I grew up in the horse industry, but neither of us know anything about farming or land management. Are there any resources you would suggest we look into to learn more about it? Any books? Any upcoming workshops? Thanks!

Greetings and thanks for the question...

As you consider farmland purchases you may enjoying reading some of OSU's cropland values and cash rent reports. These will give you an idea as to the recent trends and factors related to cropland values and cash rental rates. They can be found at:

Also of interest would be the crop enterprise budgets for corn, soybeans and wheat. The budgets will give you a perspective on the input costs associated with crop production. They can be found at:

As far as books, I'd recommend the Ohio Agronomy Guide. It has chapters on soil fertility, weed control, crop management, forages, pastures, etc.

For classes, you might keep an eye on the OSU Small Farm College program:

You can also contact you county OSU Extension office to be added to a mailing or email list for upcoming educational events:

Thanks for contacting OSU Extension.
