plants for a pergola

Asked March 24, 2016, 1:48 PM EDT

I plant a type of jamine on my pergola. It did beautifully for a few years. It had a beautiful bloom and stayed green year round. But last winter was just too cold and it all died. I need to replace it with something better suited to this zone. I would like something like the jasmine that stays green all year and hopefully has a flower at some point. Thank you for your help.

There are not many evergreen flowering vines for Maryland. The native coral honeysuckle, Lonicera sempervirens, is more evergreen than most. Otherwise you could consider the deciduous clematis or climbing hydrangea. With global warming it is possible that Clematis armanii which is hardy in zone 7 might survive most winters in Anne Arundel County especially if you have a protected spot. vw
