Residential steel entry doors are usually insulated doors with a rigid foam core, some wood framing at the perimeter and steel skin with a factory finish. So, it may not be prudent to trim it, unless the manufacturer has made it trimable. Otherwise, trimming the door may lead to rusting at the cut edge and water intrusion, leading to rot of the wood framing, and void the warranty. If possible, contact the manufacturer for advice. Another rich source of "how to" information is the Journal of Light Construction; try searching their archives or field guides.
