Urban Deer

Asked March 20, 2016, 3:00 PM EDT

Dear Expert, I live near Rock Creek and deer frequent our neighborhood. I've been reasonably successful protecting hostas, but I'd like to do a veggie garden (~15'X30') and am looking for reasonable means of protection. Would a 5 foot high fence be sufficient or do I need to consider 6 or seven feet? Will lights in the evening hours deter them (e.g., strings of Xmas-style lights)? Do you have any other suggestions or am I being unrealistic? Thank you, Louis Ostrach

The best and surest way to deter deer from a vegetable garden is to install a 7' deer fence completely around the perimeter.Hanging Christmas lights will not help. Some people have had success using deer repellents, they require frequent applications to be effective.See the attached link. http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/problems-wildlife
