The time from planting to bearing fruit depends on the type of tree you planted . A dwarf apple will produce fruit in about 3 years a semi-dwarf tree will produce in 5 years and a standard apple tree will take about 7 years. You will need to plant a second variety like a Yellow Delicious to pollinate the Red Delicious or else you won't get any fruit.
I do not know where you are located, so I would suggest you contact your local Extension Service Office for fruit tree growing requirements in your state.
