Hay sample question

Asked March 14, 2016, 3:16 PM EDT

Client brought in the attached sample asking what it is. Horses are not eating the hay. Prairie/Brome mix square ditch hay bale. Bale has a lot of brown & several pieces of the sample in it. Horses push it away & rummage through it most of bale left after overnight. One horse is drooling & other coughing w/drool/flem. No sign of foxtail

I don't know what the sample is from the picture. Would encourage the client to not force the horses to eat this hay. Find another hay source. Take the samples to a range/forage educator or specialists who can look at the sample first hand to identify the plants.
