I have a new patio planter I intend to grow vegetables in this summer. What soil should I fill it with for best results?

Here is some information on selecting potting mixes for container gardening: https://extension.illinois.edu/containergardening/soil.cfm and general info on growing vegetables in containers: https://extension.illinois.edu/containergardening/herbveggie.cfm and

Note that, although you can put something in the bottom of a very large planter to take up some of the space, thus reducing the cost of fill and the weight of the planter, putting something like pebbles in the bottom for drainage is no longer recommended. It doesn't help with drainage but can be used to reduce the fill if the pot is deeper than you need.
