Amaryllis Plant

Asked March 11, 2016, 2:41 PM EST

The Amaryllis plant we received for Christmas has beautiful, large leaves, about 3 feet tall, yet there's not even an inkling of a flower stem coming up. Is this normal? Will a stem and flower eventually appear or is this bulb a dud?

It's possible a flower may still develop but generally, the flower spike appears first, followed by the leaves. I suspect that the bulb did not receive an adequate resting period before it started to grow again or it was too weak to produce a flower.
