Vine Identification

Asked March 6, 2016, 8:28 PM EST

I have a vine growing all over my property and I haven't been able to figure out what it is. Between this, the trees, and multiflora rose there isn't much else growing. I'm cutting out all the multiflora rose and trying to remove all other invasives before planting natives this spring. Do you have any suggestions what natives I should start with for the understory?

If we had to guess, we'd say Japanese Honeysuckle. Did you see it bloom last year?
It's a common invasive vine in our area.

We have a brand new natives portion of our website that should be helpful to you:
http://www.extension.umd.edu/hgic/native-plants which includes a plant list.
Other ideas for understory include itea, fothergilla, clethra and American holly. If you have heavy deer pressure, you should protect the clethra.
