pecan shell mulch

Asked March 6, 2016, 6:52 PM EST

I was recently given a large number of pecans (from state of Mississippi). I have shelled a large number by hand. Some of the fruit contents have black spots although they still taste good. Some were completely black and obviously moldy. Can I safely use these shells (and moldy contents) in a mulch pile? (I have some pecan trees but all are quite young and not bearing fruit yet.)

Dear gardener,

You can certainly use pecan shells as mulch, although if you are growing pecan trees I suggest you use a different mulch for those. Molds are among the natural decomposers and will not have negative effects on mulch.
