If purchasing coconut coir slabs or cubes specifically designed for hydroponic systems from a reputable supplier, you should not encounter issues with insects or plant pathogens. Coconut coir is an organic media supports microorganisms such as fungi and bacteria once plants are put into culture. Most issues with coir in the past have been due to high salt levels in the growing media - though more recent production technologies have minimized this issue.
