Having an elected official hold the position of zoning administrator raises several issues. Depending on the administrative structure on who the zoning administrator reports to this can create an incompatible office. It can also create the perception of politicizing the zoning administrator decisions. If a court were to find these positions incompatible, then all decisions by the zoning administrator would be suspect.

Best practices indicate that the zoning administrator should not be an elected or appointed official for the municipality they work in.
