Lead contaminated soil

Asked January 25, 2016, 3:03 PM EST

How do you know if you soil had been contaminated by lead? Is there a test for soil. buying an old home in Junction City where lead paint was not properly abated by owner. Concerned about having a garden or children & animals in the yard. Are there acceptable levels of lead in soil? if so what are the level number-range acceptable? Thanks

The only way to confirm if there is lead in your garden or landscape soil is to have the soil tested by a laboratory. For much more detailed information see the OSU Extension publication, "Evaluation and Reducing Lead Hazard in Gardens and Landscapes". This publication provides specifics on how to properly collect a soil sample, a link to soil testing labs that conduct lead tests, and a chart to help you interpret the results of your soil test. There is also information on how to reduce lead exposure of children and other users of the landscape.
