First Time Grafting a fruit tree
Grafting compound is a product used to help seal tree wounds and grafts. You will find it in older literature. It does its job but I have found that there are similar products to use that arent so messy. When I was instructed on grafting techniques, we never used products like grafting compounds. We would use thick rubber bands that were cut so that it would leave a long strip. Whether it was a whip n tongue graft or a banana flap graft, we would wrap the scion and root stock with the rubber band strip so that the tissues were pressed together with tension created by the rubber band. The next step was to cover the with paraffin wax to seal it.
