Asked January 9, 2016, 3:22 PM EST

I found this while hiking in the woods in CT. The berry is about 3/4 cm long, with two seeds black seeds inside coated in yellow. The spines on the branch are sharp and about 1/2 cm

I'm not certain, but it looks like barberry. There is a variety of a "garden escapee" barberry shrub that is considered an invasive species in CT, Berberis thunbergii (Japanese barberry). Here's more information about it: http://www.invasiveplantatlas.org/subject.html?sub=3010
