Strong Women & Strong People Programs

Asked January 6, 2016, 4:18 AM EST

I live in McMinnville, where we have recently lost TWO sources of weight training specifically tailored for women, Curves and Cindy's Gym. When can we expect OSU Extension to offer a Strong Women program to help us fill this LARGE gap in our community resources? We have few choices for weight training for women only, in this town. Please help??

Hello,
Thank you for your email and your request for a StrongWomen program in Yamhill County. I am the state-wide program leader for the StrongWomen program and conduct at least two trainings around the state each year. We have not had any potential leaders attend a training from Yamhill County over the past five years so at this time there are not any certified leaders there. I definitely share your concern over not having opportunities specifically designed for women to participate in strength training. I plan to hold a training this spring and would be happy to hold that training in your area. I would love to have you and/or other individuals from your community participate so you can bring the program to McMinnville. If this is something you are interested in, please let me know.

I'm sorry we don't have anything to offer immediately. I know this suggestion isn't ideal, but Miriam Nelson, the developer of Strong Women has a program video that is available online for self-directed exercise: http://www.amazon.com/Strong-Women-Osteoporosis-Miriam-Nelson/dp/B000YV1KX6

Her books are also great resources: http://www.strongwomen.com/books/ and will help you develop a personalized program until we can get a group format going in your neck of the woods.

Thanks again for contacting us and I hope to be able to have more to share soon!
If you'd like to reply back to me with your contact information, I can include you in future training announcements.

Sincerely,
Lauren
