question about pinon trees

Asked January 1, 2016, 6:55 PM EST

Was wondering if you knew if pinon trees would grow here in illinois. I might be getting a farm and would like a couple of pinon trees (not for profit). I am originally from New Mexico and i miss eating pinons.

Sadly, Pinyon trees likely will not grow in Illinois. Their native habitat, the Southwestern United States, is ideally suited for these trees. Read more from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service about where they'll grow:

While Shelby County falls in the correct USDA Hardiness Zone (you're in zone 6), the soil, sunlight, and other factors likely will not allow you to grow them. Read more here: http://www.arborday.org/trees/treeguide/TreeDetail.cfm?ItemID=1093
