Thank you for contacting eXtension. You can find technical information on pond construction in this publication: http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/nrcs144p2_030362.pdf

Constructing a pond is not an inexpensive process, if done correctly. You do not want to hire the neighbor who may be good with a backhoe, but has never constructed a pond before, to do the job. You may want to visit with a pond consultant before you begin. You also may want to visit with your local conservation district or nrcs

office for local advise about possible permits

You need to be clear about your goals for the pond before construction. You can visit the Penn State Extension water website (extension.psu.edu/water) for more information on pond management including an online pond management class beginning in April of 2016. Also, feel free to contact me directly at jac20@psu.edu. James Clark, Extension Water Resources Extension Educator
