The average first mating of a gilt is at 8 months of age. This is effected by when the gilt entered puberty. Many gilts enter puberty around 6 months of age and are allowed to go through two heat cycles before mating. For later maturing gilts, it is recommended to wait until two heat cycles have passed before the first mating.
