Choosing a hardy and flowering tree

Asked December 17, 2015, 2:19 PM EST

I want to plant a tree in DC to the memory of my pet. It must last 50 years (at least). I would prefer a flowering tree of medium size. Thank you. Marie

A few native trees to consider for your area, with size and color in mind, include the following: Amelanchier arbora( serviceberry)--Carpinus caroliniana (american hornbean)--Cercis canadensis (eastern redbud)--Cornus florida (flowering dogwood)--Crataegus viridis (green hawthorn)--ilex opaca (american holly)--All of these mentioned will range in size from 25 to 35 feet. they will also be showy in bloom or bear fall berries and good leaf color in the fall. Before making your choice and consulting with a tree nursery, have your soil tested.
