Is it possible to smother plants to death by piling too much snow on them?

You cannot smother a plant by piling snow on it. In fact, snow acts as an insulator. Herbaceous plants (perenmials) die back to the ground in the fall, so piling snow is not an issue. On the other hand, woody plants like trees and shrubs will be damaged by piling large amounts of snow on them. The weight of the snow can break branches.
