Leaves decomposition

Asked November 30, 2015, 2:17 PM EST

I have spread Maple tree leaves on my garden and have tilled them in. Is there something I can add that will hasten the decomposition process?

The addition of a balanced fertilizer(10-10-10) to the soil may help to speed up decomposition as well as keeping the soil on the slightly moist side, which generally is not a problem in this area. Mulching/shredding the leaves into smaller pieces prior to adding to the soil can help, too.

For more information on adding organic matter to garden soil, see the brochure EC 1561 from OSU Extension. Below is a direct link to it.
