Pruning in winter: 2 questions

Asked November 29, 2015, 12:14 PM EST

1. Can I prune an old, old established arborvitae in winter? 2. Can I prune an overgrown rhododendron in winter? It's encroaching on our walkway to the house.

No to both. While arborvitae can be pruned almost anytime. It is not good to prune them this time of year. You should wait until late winter /early spring. They can then be pruned any time through mid-summer. If you prune your rhododendron now, you will be cutting off the spring blooms. Wait until after it blooms.

Thank you very much for your help!
