lawn repair in December

Asked November 28, 2015, 10:51 AM EST

Hello, I have had to tear up a significant portion of my lawn to repair a sewer line. I am wondering how to treat it in December...it will be heavily shaded in the summer. Should I put in sod now, planning on overseeding with a shade seed in the spring or fall?? Or should I just cover it with leaves and let it sit until I can sow shade tolerant seed in the spring? Thanks for your help.

We recommend that you wait until spring to seed. Cover with some leaves and sow with a fine fescue grass seed in the spring. Fine fescues are comprised of creeping red fescue, hard fescue and sheep fescue. They do not perform well under frequent foot traffic, wet conditions, or high rates of fertilizer. They do not require frequent mowing. See our publication on lawn renovation http://extension.umd.edu/sites/default/files/_images/programs/hgic/Publications/HG102%20Lawn%20Estab...
