Wholes in my sweet potatoes

Asked November 22, 2015, 9:32 PM EST

Something ate tiny wholes in my sweet potatoes. Are they still edible? Can I still store them in a barrel in the ground?

Also can I store my sweet potatoes in the same barrel as my regular white potatoes as long as they are not touching?

Without visuals, tiny holes in sweet potatoes sound like wireworm damage – the places can be cut out and safely used.

Sweet potatoes are not related to Irish potatoes – they are more tropical in nature and require different storage conditions.

Proper curing after harvest is the best key to successful storage. After curing, sweet potatoes should be stored at 85 to 90% relative humidity and stay above 50 degrees to avoid chilling.
