Looks like a Dracaena marginata, which would be a houseplant in Massachusetts. It needs brightly filtered light, such as through a sheer curtain in front of a sunny window. Daytime temps temperatures of 60-70, and possibly 10 degrees cooler at night. Water when the soil is dry about 2 to 3 inches below the surface. Water thoroughly but do NOT let the bottom of the pot sit in water or the roots will suffocate and the plant will die. Check weekly, and soon you will be able to figure out the best watering interval. Use a houseplant fertilizer twice a month, following the directions on the container. Only fertilize in spring, summer and autumn. Withhold fertilizer in the winter, and water less frequently then. During your weekly checks, remove any dead or dying leaves. You can prune the growing tips at any time to keep the plant from getting too tall and leggy. New growth will begin just below where you cut it off. You can root the gut off leaf tips by dusting the cut end in rooting hormone and putting the stem in moist soil so it can root.
