My orchid is producing flower buds, but they wither and drop off before blooming. What can I do?

The most common reason for orchid bud drop, termed 'bud blast', is widely fluctuating temperatures and low humidity.
For many houseplants, especially tropicals, our forced heat results in very dry air, which needs some attention. Grouping plants together and placing them on trays of moist pebbles can help address the issue.
