safe drinking water pH level for horses

Asked November 5, 2015, 7:20 PM EST

I recently had a barn well tested at a pH of 8.6, which is more alkaline than the standard safe drinking parameters for people. What is the range of safe pH levels for horses?

Lane County Oregon

Livestock are normally suggested to keep within the range of 6 to 8.5. 8.6 is just above that and can cause some reduced feed efficiency and digestive upset if the horses have not been consuming the water long term. If you choose to treat the water there are water systems in which acid is added at small levels to bring the pH down slightly.
