Yellowing of Blue Spruce Tree

Asked November 1, 2015, 3:22 PM EST

We just trimmed this tree by cutting a lot of the low branches. Now we're concerned about the yellowing of the under branches. Any advice? Thank you! Francie Weeks, Towson

If you can attach a photo of the tree to a reply, that would be helpful.

Blue spruce struggle in the environment of Maryland and do not live to great age. They are susceptible to a couple of diseases when stressed. Interior needle browning is commonly an indicator of root dieback, caused by drought or disease.

Should we put something on the cuts to reduce chances of fungus? Thank you!

No, we do not recommend applying anything to the pruning cuts.
