You best option is to trap the rat(s). Unfortunately, you likely have more than one rat (where there is one there are usually more). Here is a fact sheet with information on trapping rats: http://icwdm.org/handbook/rodents/NorwayRats.asp.
In addition to trapping, it will be helpful to make the habitat around your house less attractive to rats by removing potential shelter and food (the fact sheet also discusses this subject). This will prevent rats from coming onto your property in the first place, and then getting into your house walls. Using pesticides is another option, but caution needs to be taken using dangerous chemicals in homes. Also, poisoned rats tend to retreat to their "homes" when they are not feeling well, and if home is in your house walls, then you will have decaying rats in your walls. Trapping and habitat modification are likely your best options. Good luck!
