How does a 45-year-old tree root system grow?

Asked October 25, 2015, 6:34 PM EDT

I have a small crack in my foundation that I wonder if the large aspen tree root system has caused. And, if so, will it continue to cause damage?

It is hard to say if the aspen caused the crack. Tree roots like to follow the path of least resistance. They tend to turn away from sturdy foundations. If there is a small crack that the roots find, they can grow into it and make it bigger. Aspen roots grow primarily in the top 2 to 3 feet of soil and can grow in a wide area. If you are concerned about damage, you may want to consult with a certified arborist to see if the tree could be the problem and should be removed.
