Wind break

Asked October 24, 2015, 6:33 PM EDT

We will be building a home in the middle of a field. We need to plant trees as a barrier/break from the wind and snow. What are the best options?

Thanks in advance.

The main suggestion I have for windbreak species is to use a variety, not just one species. You can use a mix of evergreens and deciduous shrubs. I do not suggest using leyland cypress (overused and too many problems). Arborvitae is a better evergreen choice. You can mix in viburnums, clethra, calycanthus and other shrubs to make more diverse and effective windbreak. For instructions on creating a windbreak see this publication.
