I received two items in plastic packaging from my local food bank on 10/20/15 that are actually past their expiration date. I know USDA states that packaged goods are good for 1-2 years past the use by date, but I wasn't sure if that was plastic AND paper, or just paper packaging. The items are: Gulf Pacific Premium Whole Grain Brown Rice (16 oz. bag), expired 8/16/15 and Heartland Whole Wheat Spaghetti (2 lb. bag), expired 8/13/15. Are these safe to eat?
Lake County Ohio
Good question! Yes, the food is still safe to eat, although they could potentially lose quality after their expiration date. Here's more info from the USDA: http://blogs.usda.gov/2013/06/27/before-you-toss-food-wait-check-it-out/
Hope this helps!
