Planting a winterberry bush

Asked October 15, 2015, 8:43 PM EDT

I would like to add a couple winterberry bushes to my yard and need to find a space. Can I plant them under a maple tree? It could be a Norway Maple tree. I'm afraid it will be too dry.

Winterberry, Ilex verticillata, does well in light and heavy soils, prefers moist, acid soil, high organic matter soils: full sun or partial shade. Its best fruit set is in full sun and does require a male pollinator. With the extensive roots of a Norway maple, it would not be advisable to plant them in this location.
